My God.
My heart goes out to those harmed and their families. My heart goes out to the city of Paris. I hope those responsible for this atrocity are soon caught and brought to justice.
There's one thing about this situation that I'm starting to wonder about, though. Eyewitnesses claim that they heard the gunmen say they were from "al-Qaeda in Yemen." Most likely, they were simply psychotic fanboys who declared themselves members of al-Qaeda rather than actually joining it. These days, any wannabe jihadi can put up a black flag and declare themselves an "al-Qaeda affiliate." That being said, al-Qaeda is still an active terrorist organization. Over the past decade, they've been eviscerated by counterterrorism efforts all over the world. Most of its leadership has been killed or captured. At this point, they've been overshadowed by ISIS as the face of Islamic extremism.
With all this in mind, perhaps al-Qaeda has decided to become more proactive? In September, Ayman al-Zawahiri declared a new branch of al-Qaeda had been established - called "al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent. AQIS has taken responsibility for the assassination of a senior Pakistani Army officer and a failed assault on a Pakistani dockyard in Karachi. Many people have stated that al-Qaeda was motivated to establish al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent as a way to gain back ideological ground taken by ISIS.
What I'm wondering is could al-Qaeda be going even further to gain back status from ISIS? I have no idea. As I've stated, it seems at this point that the perpetrators of the Charlie Hebdo attack were likely pathetic wannabes claiming to be from al-Qaeda. Still, the idea that there is a larger plot at work bothers me. Perhaps its a side-effect from 9/11 occurring when I was 5 years old and coming of age in the fearful atmosphere that has dominated America since September 2001.
Maybe I'm just paranoid. I hope I'm paranoid. I hope I'm wrong.
I truly hope I'm wrong.
RIP to those harmed by the Charlie Hebdo attack and their families.

Random Piece of Writing
I wanted to make sure I didn't forget this passage after it came to me. Civilians thought that post-traumatic stress looked like Rambo, The Deer Hunter, or God only knows how many other tropes and clichés. Veterans knew the truth. It was the guy or gal at the bar on a Wednesday night, more comfortable around strangers than at home because their inability to empathize or show compassion was leading them to fail at being a partner or parent, usually both.
We Miss the Old DeviantART
Seriously, is there anyone on this site who likes the new layout? I don't mean, "eh, it's okay," I mean does anyone enthusiastically enjoy it the way so many people did the old site? "Retiring" the old site has undoubtedly been the worst decision DeviantART has ever made.
The Neophyte Operative
This is a promo for a story I've worked on and off for the last few years. I started it a while before I started writing my current novel, shelved it for years, and recently got back to it. I expect to have it finished before the end of the year, maybe by the end of this summer. Uprisings and war are spreading throughout a world reeling from a global financial collapse. The year is 2011. Nathan Ryker is the new guy at a private intelligence company based in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Desperate to get back in the fight any way he can after the unexpected end of his Special Forces career, Nathan ends up working as a deniable, and expendable, contractor loaned out to the CIA and other intelligence agencies. He also grapples with the anxiety and insecurity associated with starting a new career in an unfamiliar world where the best-case scenario can immediately turn into the worst. From Pakistan to Miami, the Andes Mountains to the Libyan desert, Nathan finds himself in increasingly
Fuck the new DeviantART
The new DeviantART setup sucks sweaty ass. I went as long as I could without changing to the new layout. Wow, it's worse than I could've imagined. This is not the fucking site I logged on to eight years ago. I could deal with moderate change, but I literally don't know how to use this website anymore. I've slowly drifted away from DeviantART over the last few years, but now I'm seriously contemplating leaving for good. Congratulations DA, you just upheld the tradition of getting rid of the best stuff and replacing it with shit. Way to kill the golden goose, you shortsighted fucks.

What a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the families whose loved ones were killed in this attack, and I hope the perpetrators are caught and brought to justice, as you said, before they cause more harm.
